Myocholine Tablets contain bethanechol chloride as active ingredient. They are taken to treat urinary retention (for example following an operation or after giving birth) and also in the treatment of reflux oesophagitis.
Bethanechol chloride has a specific action on certain parts of the body. Technically it is a choline ester. To some extent, it mimics the activity of acetylcholine, a substance that occurs naturally in the body and is involved in the transmission of signals between certain nerves and muscles.
These nerves belong to the parasympathetic nervous system that controls some of the actions of such organs as the bladder and the stomach and the intestine. Hence the effects of bethanechol chloride are to facilitate bladder emptying and increase the motility of the gastrointestinal tract.
